Bronte Country and Bronte
Parsonage museum
Just a short drive
from Bradford to the Pennine moors and you enter Bronte
Country. The dramatic moorland inspired the Bronte
Sisters to pen novels which are classics of English
literature. At the heart of Bronte Country is Haworth.
Its rugged main street has a host of specialist shops,
including antique books, paintings & tearooms. Imagine
the everyday lives of the Bronte Sisters as you walk
round Haworth Church and the Bronte Parsonage Museum.
The Bronte’s were an
intensely close-knit family and their parsonage home
formed the heart of their world from early childhood
until the ends of their brief lives. The Parsonage was
built in 1778-9 and was home to the literary sisters
from 1820 to 1861. It was opened as a museum in 1928. It
was here that Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre, Emily created
Wuthering Heights and Anne penned The Tenant of Wildfell
Hall. Today the museum contains a vast array of Bronte
artefacts, including several of their original
possessions.
The Parsonage also
has a varied exhibition programme as well as regular
events.
