National Media Museum
The newly named National
Media Museum, formerly the National Museum of Photography, Film
& Television, was founded in 1983 and quickly became the most
visited national museum outside London, attracting an average of
700,000 visitors each year.
It is home to several
galleries, film festivals and the original IMAX. When opened,
also in 1983, the IMAX cinema was the first ever IMAX cinema in
Europe. The screen is 48' (14.6m) high x 65' (19.81m) wide and
had to be lowered into the auditorium through the roof as there
was no other way to install it.
Filled with the past,
present and future of television, highlights include TV Heaven,
where you can choose to watch your favourite TV moments from the
hundreds of classic TV programmes. Hands-on exhibitions also
feature throughout, including the opportunity to read the news
and present the weather.
Entrance is free.
