Saltaire and Salts Mill
Saltaire is the perfect
example of a Victorian village and has joined the Taj Mahal and
the pyramids of Egypt as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mill owner and
philanthropist Sir Titus Salt built his village in the 19th
century for the spiritual, physical and moral welfare of his
workers. The village included park, school, library, recreation
and learning institute and outdoor sport facilities. The streets
were named after his children and family. Today his great mill
complex, opened in 1853, is the key feature of Saltaire and
houses the 1853 gallery containing the largest collection of art
in Europe by renowned Bradfordian David Hockney.
